It has been a pretty awesome year for the App Store with many milestones reached. The App Store reached 1 million live apps in December 2013 and Appsfire was first to announce it in a tweet.

Apple also announced a few days ago that customers spent over $10 billion on the App Store in 2013.

When most of the tech blogs shared their top 2013 apps before the end of December last year, we decided to wait a little to take in consideration the impact of the christmas sales on the App Score of apps [our proprietary quality score for apps].

Apple also published a ranking but many apps have been launched in 2012, such as Duolingo (launched in November 2012). Apps from Apple ranking were selected editorially while our ranking is more focus on users.

How about finding out what users preferred best? You will notice that the difference is significant with what Apple actually picked

Our selection indeed follow this methodology: it is a selection of the 25 best apps created in 2013, sorted by price & category, ranked by App Score (The App Score is a simple dynamic quality score for any app of the iTunes App Store with a number between 0 and 99).

Nota bene: since the App Score is a global ranking, our top 25 is a worldwide selection, not only based on apps available in the US App Store.
