More than a year ago, we invented the first tracker that measures the popularity of an app based on what users share on Twitter. We call it AppTrends. You can see in real time what apps are trending, before they even reach the App Store ranking. You can even move back in time and see how this ranking evolves. You can even see who is tweeting what and why an app is Trending. For exemple Apple’s iTunes Trailer was already #2 most popular app, way before it became top 5 apps in the App Store ranking.

This is the most transparent way to understand why apps are popular.

But with Twitter now fully integrated in iOS 5 we expect a massive surge of how apps will be shared by users between each other. Curiously, Apple has not push the sharing integration as far as they did with photos (1 click experience). But more people will be aware of Twitter from now on.
