Straight from the Labs: Introducing Appstein to Help You Download More Intelligently

What you see in our major product lines - our mobile apps, App Booster - is just the tip of the iceberg. Below the surface there’s a lot of data and intelligence about apps, and we’ll often leverage this to come up with interesting lab experiments. Sometimes these experiments remain internal, but often we share with them others. This is how OpenUDID was born.

Today we’re introducing Appstein, a simple browser extension (for Chrome & Safari) that will make the iTunes Preview page a little more useful.

Why would anyone want a better iTunes Preview page? Because the information presented on these pages is not good enough to make a decision as to whether an app is worth downloading.

Anytime you click on an iTunes link from your browser, Appstein will enhance the traditional App Store Preview page with some useful information so you can make a better purchasing decision. This page usually appears before you land on iTunes.

Here is how the Preview page looks like without Appstein:

Here is how it will look like with Appstein :

As you can see, Appstein appends a few options to this page so you can:

  • Consult the App Score to immediately get a sense for the relative quality of the app.
  • One-click share to Twitter and Facebook.
  • Send to your iPhone in one click (with Pastefire). And if you’re already connected to Facebook on Appsfire.com and one of our apps, it will automatically send a link to your phone.
  • Create a simple widget to put on your site.
  • Check the ranking history on App Annie (useful for developers and journalists)

Remember, a browser extension is a two-click install and you’ll get Appstein any time you visit an iTunes Preview page, no matter where you come from.

That’s it. We created it in a weekend and if you like it, we’ll improve it.

So install Appstein on Chrome or Safari, Download better apps and let us know what you think.

There are many things I can say about this new appstein effort, but i think one word sums it up best: Installed.

Installed. Great idea, hopefully it gets well known and helps people learn more about great apps.

AppStein for Safari recently stopped working. It shows as installed and active - but it does nothing!

      Hi Ary,

We’re looking into it but that Apple has changed many things, so a quick resolution should not be expected soon.

Were you using it on Safari, or Chrome?
      Cheers

Hi Ary. Check again, it should be fixed!
